Imane Khelif, an Algerian fighter who just won gold in the women’s boxing event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the French capital, has once again been placed under fire after a medical report that cast doubt on her qualification for female competition became leaked.

French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia obtained the study, which revealed that Khelif has internal testicles and an XY chromosome composition, which could imply a hereditary disorder called 5-alpha reductase insufficiency. This disorder affects sexual development and frequently leads to limited secondary masculine traits and ambiguous genitalia.

Olympic gold medallist Imane Khelif is a man:

Khelif’s anatomy, including the lack of a uterus and the existence of what was characterized as a micropenis, was described in the study, which was made in June 2023 by medical experts from Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers and Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris. In order to match Khelif’s physical characteristics with her self-perceived gender identity, it also suggested hormone therapy and surgical correction.

There has been issues with Khelif’s involvement with female sports in the past. Citing similar concerns, the Global Boxing Organization (IBA) banned her from participating during the 2023 world championship gold medal fight in New Delhi. Significant controversy has been sparked due to disclosure, especially among those who support rigid distinctions between genders in sports.

Some prominent public personalities, such as former US President Donald Trump, brought attention to the subject in conversations about gender-based sports policies, while others, like Piers Morgan, commented on the issue and called for a reassessment of Khelif’s eligibility.

Khelif has been the target of harsh online criticism from a variety of perspectives. Khelif’s eligibility should be reviewed, according to some readers, one of whom said that “Italian boxer Angela Carini should be given the gold medal.” Others expressed strong opinions, with one demanding for a public apology and another denouncing Khelif’s involvement as “unfair.”

In her responses to previous disputes, Khelif had affirmed her gender identification and maintained her stance, saying, “I was born as a woman, I live as a woman, and I am qualified.” She added that well-known people like J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk have fueled the media attention that was hurting her career. Khelif subsequently complained of severe online abuse to French authorities.
