A touching exchange between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian Paralympian javelin thrower Navdeep Singh recently created a moment that went viral. On Thursday, PM Modi signed his kit during the conversation.
On the following day, PM Modi received the Indian delegation attending the Paris Paralympics at his home inside our capital.
Navdeep gave PM Modi a cap during their conversation. As Navdeep carefully placed the cap on PM Modi’s head, the latter sat down.
He continued by asking PM Modi to sign his throwing arm on the left side of his jacket. With humility, PM Modi consented and put his signature on his left arm.
The video was posted on Instagram with the remark, “A very touching gesture by my friend and India’s pride, Navdeep Singh,” written by PM Modi.
PM Modi questioned Navdeep about the video that went viral after his victory during their conversation, asking, “Have you seen your video or not? How do you act with such violence?”
Navdeep answered, “I had finished fourth last time (at the Tokyo Paralympics),” in response. I had promised you before I left for Paris, and now I have kept my word.”
Paralympian star Navdeep Singh and PM Modi’s lighthearted banter goes
Navdeep’s silver medal in the men’s javelin F41 event was upgraded to a gold one when Sadegh Beit Sayah of the Islamic Republic of Iran was disqualified from the final.
Before being disqualified, Sadegh held the top spot with a Paralympic record throw of 47.64 meters, while Navdeep had initially finished second with a season-best 47.32 meters.
For Navdeep, who had come fourth in Tokyo, it was a redemption arc in the crammed Stade de France.
Navdeep, who started his campaign in the final with a poor try, finished second out of the six competitors. He was unable to break the momentum and went over the line, leading to a foul attempt.
Navdeep went to the top with his season-best throw of 47.32 meters on his third try, showing depth of skill.
All in all, India’s effort was historic. Boasting a record collection of 29 prizes, including 7 golds, nine silvers, and thirteen bronzes, the Indian contingent wrapped off its historic Paralympics campaign in Paris.
With 29 awards, India has collected most medals in Paralympic history. After the historic campaign ended, India’s record medal total of 19, set at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, was exceeded. India finished the main event in the eighteenth place.
