IPL Teams to Retain Five Players as BCCI Prepares for Major Auction

IPL Teams to Retain Five Players as BCCI

IPL Teams to Retain Five Players as BCCI: Without offering a right to match option, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is anticipated to allow IPL teams to keep five players during the forthcoming auction, according to The Indian Express.

The ten team owners and the BCCI recently had a meeting at the organization’s headquarters to talk about player retention. For continuity, most said they would prefer to keep 5–6 players on the team. The BCCI has granted their request in response to this feedback because it thinks that permitting the retention of up to five players will contribute to safeguarding the teams’ brand value.

IPL Teams to Retain Five Players as BCCI:

Franchises were allowed to keep up to four players prior to the 2022 season, provided that they could not keep more than three Indian players and two foreign players. On the other hand, it is currently unclear how many foreign players each organization can keep.

Now that the Mumbai Indians are expected to keep five players, all eyes are on them. Even though they have had a stable core for the previous 10 years, their lackluster showing this season under Pandya’s leadership begs the question of how they will handle player retention.

The retention expenses for the next auction have not yet been finalized by the BCCI.

The player auction is going to be a big deal because the BCCI has decided on the amount of retentions. At the most recent meeting, the majority of franchises—especially those that have participated in the competition from the beginning—promoted big auctions every four to five years. Citing concerns about continuity, they asked the BCCI to postpone this year’s major auction by a year because they didn’t want to lose players in whom they had made significant investments. The last two significant auctions took place in 2018 and 2022, on a four-year cycle.
